Personal Health Insurance: Youth Going Without

June 22nd, 2011 No comments

The youth of America needs health care reform more than anyone since a large percentage of them are choosing not to carry personal health insurance.  Unfortunately, they have not shown the support for reform that they should be.  The youth of America continue to be the the highest uninsured group out there.

According to the article “Youth Gone Wild, Without Health Insurance” by ECHealthInsurance, about 36% of young Americans oppose health care reform which is surprising considering that research shows about 33% of youth under 30 are uninsured.  The

Congress should be working to expand Medicare to cover all necessary care for everyone

June 21st, 2011 No comments

In 1777, the Commonwealth of Vermont became the first sovereign state in the world to abolish slavery. On May 26, 2011, Vermont became the first state in the U.S. to commit itself to establishing a truly universal single-payer health care plan. Thus, Vermont could lead the rest of the United States to do what all of the other major industrialized countries have already done: Establish a not-for-profit, single-payer national program to provide health care for all of us. Single-payer movements have already made important progress in California and Pennsylvania. The New Jersey One Plan One Nation coalition is leading the campaign in New Jersey.

Both the abolition of slavery and the establishment of a truly universal health-care system were based on human rights.

Health insurance exchange panel created to deal with reality of reform

It isn’t much, but it is progress.

At issue is a new health-care entity known as a health insurance exchange. The federal health-care reform bill so despised in Oklahoma requires states to create such online insurance marketplaces. Oklahoma was in line to receive a 54 million federal grant for that purpose, which Gov. Mary Fallin initially agreed to accept.

But that decision quickly drew the ire of reform opponents, who argued that taking the money would be tantamount to endorsing “Obamacare,” as health reform is derisively known. Full Post…

Rate Review Process Does Not Keep Premiums Artificially Low

June 20th, 2011 No comments

This weeks Cavalcade of Risk included an article from the Healthcare Economist about a bill in the CA legislature that would require health insurance premiums to be approved by the state Insurance Commissioner before they could go into effect.  The concern from those opposed to the bill is that giving the Insurance Commissioner the final say when it comes to premiums could mean that carriers wouldnt be able to raise premiums enough to cover claims.  In that case, the result would either be that carriers leave the state, claims go unpaid, or the overall quality of healthcare would decline.

In Colorado, health insurance premiums have to be approved by the Division of Insurance before they can be instituted.

AARP Medicare Supplements In Jeopardy
