NFL Lockout Update: Health Insurance Benefits Extended
Many players were concerned about losing their health insurance benefits through the NFL yesterday as the lockout started. With an anticipated extension players have time to reevaluate the benefits of this lockout and what they can do to ensure health insurance coverage.
According to the article “NFL, NFLPA Get 24-Hour Extension for Negotiations” by Nate Davis on USA Today’s website the extension is 24 hours to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement. Players were scrambling to get COBRA or search health insurance quotes for an affordable policy for them and their families, but it looks like things have slowed down a bit. NFLPA executive director, DeMaurice Smith, says he appreciates everyone’s patience and that ultimately they want to play football, which is great news for all the fans out there.
Jason LaCanfora, for the NFL Network, thinks this could be a precursor to a week-long extension and ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that the league and the union are not meeting face to face today but rather they are sitting down separately with the mediators who will figure out how long a second extension will need to be if deemed necessary. If the players do end up going to court throughout this endeavor they will be lead by quarterbacks Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Peyton Manning as plaintiffs. Free agency has been put on hold and players and fans alike are waiting to see what comes of all of this mayhem.
