Best Affirms MAPFRE RE ‘A+’ Ratings; Outlook Remains Negative

A.M. Best Europe – Rating Services Limited has affirmed the financial strength rating of ‘A+’ and issuer credit rating of “aa-” of Spain’s MAPFRE RE, Compania de Reaseguros, S.A. However, Best’s outlook on both ratings remains negative.

The ratings reflect MAPFRE RE’s “integral role within MAPFRE S.A. , its strong although declining stand-alone risk-adjusted capitalization, resilient underwriting performance and its strong competitive position in the Spanish and Portuguese speaking markets,” Best explained.

Validus, Allied World Tussle over Transatlantic Heats Up

In dueling press releases both Allied World Assurance and Validus Holdings reaffirmed their respective positions in their competing efforts to acquire the outstanding shares of Transatlantic Holdings, Inc.

Bermuda-based Validus noted that it had “delivered to the Board of Directors of Transatlantic a Superior Proposal that provides a 27.1 percent premium to the June 10, 2011 Transatlantic unaffected share price of $44.01, and a 5.3 percent premium to the current implied value of the Allied World transaction. Employer Funding of Individual Health Insurance – The Rules Are Changing

Earlier this year, I wrote about HRAs and Colorado law, looking closely at the Colorado Division of Insurances stance regarding the use of HRA funds to pay individual health insurance premiums.  Long story short, in 2009 the DOI had basically said that HRA funds could not be used to purchase individual health insurance, because the policies would have to conform to the provisions of Article 16, which applies to group health insurance (individual policies dont have the same mandates, coverage, or underwriting standards as group policies, so they would not be able to conform to the provisions of Article 16).

A.J. Foyt Leads Indy 500

I am so glad they replaced Donald Trump with A.J. Foyt as the pace car driver to start off the Indy 500 this year. Regardless of your political affiliation, Donald Trump has simply been making a fool of himself. The Indy 500 is a chance for us to relax on the weekend and watch some great racing. Donald Trump is all about himself, so it is great to have him replaced with A.J. Foyt to drive the pace car.

Retail Web Site O.co, Known as Overstock.com, Now Selling Insurance

O.co, better known as online bargain retailer Overstock.com Inc., is now offering auto and home insurance on its Web site. The online retailer of furniture, clothing and gifts has partnered with online personal lines insurance agency Answer Financial to offer comparison quotes in all 50 states from as many as 20 insurance companies.

Ratings Recap: Washington Casualty, Western, One Beacon (notes)

A.M. Best Co. has upgraded the financial strength rating to ‘A-’ from ‘B+’ and issuer credit rating to “a-” from “bbb-” of Washington Casualty Company , both with stable outlooks.
