You have heard the stories, they all end the same. A young family is embarking on a new future together. Part-time jobs help the young couple afford to go to school and afford rent in their new apartment. They are bogged down with homework and their jobs, but still happy to be with each other. Good news! The young wife is pregnant. Bad news: they did not have health insurance. It could cost a few thousand dollars for an in and out birth, but complications during the birth landed their newborn baby in the newborn intensive care unite (NICU) for a week. Now the charges are up to $30,000; more money than the young family could ever dream of paying back.

Change Is Coming for the Healthcare Industry

A potential decline in physician office visits, record spending on health information technology, a total redesign of insurance markets, and the creation of accountable care organizations are among the health industry trends in store for 2011, according to a PriceWaterhouseCoopers report.

The report authors used an online survey of 1,000 U.S. adults to assess consumer perspectives on health reform, healthcare usage, and payment for healthcare. Those surveyed represented a cross-section of the population in terms of insurance status, age, gender, income, and geography. Full Post…

AskBlue Healthcare Reform

The new healthcare reform law passed in 2010 has many individuals and employers scratching their head.  Not only is it in depth, and not always straightforward, but there are different aspects to the law that make it even more complicated.  With this being the case, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) developed a useful tool called AskBlue Healthcare Reform which is an interactive tool developed to help consumers better understand the new law and learn how it will impact their individual heath insurance policies.

AskBlue Healthcare Reform is accessed through the same name website and offers a simple explanation of healthcare reform and the different aspects throughout the law.

Few Carriers Offering Child Only Policies During Open Enrollment

Last fall, when the law began requiring coverage for children under the age of 19 to be guaranteed issue, most of the major individual health insurance carriers in Colorado stopped issuing new child-only policies.  Carriers will still issue coverage on a guaranteed-issue basis (although the pricing can be adjusted based on medical history) to children under 19 as long as the primary applicant on the policy is an adult, and existing child-only policies were not impacted.

Kaiser Permanente and Rocky Mountain Health Plans continued to offer child-only policies.
